Water needs and projects on the Island of Zanzibar, Tanzania

In Tanzania, the search for water is a daily task that is critical to survival. But the water is usually unclean, unsafe, and introduces desease into the family. But the doors are opening for NGO's (Non Government Organization). CHaRA is one of these organizations. With CHaRA taking the lead, Well Water for Africa is looking to meet the needs of those local government agencies taking the initiative to invest in clean and safe water.

On the Island of Zanzibar which became part of Tanzania when that country was formed, there are currently two open governmaent invitations where wells can be drilled today if we had the resources in place. Of course that takes money, and as the money is provided the wells will be drilled.

The Government on Zanzibar has also extended a general invitation to drill additional wells. See the project descriptions at Dole District Water Projects. As the resources come in, we will contact the Ministers involved to begin these well sites.

There is another water project not involving wells on the mainland near Arusha under the shadow of Mt. Meru, near Mt. Kilimanjaro. Two wells have been tried, but both came up dry. They have rights to a spring but have no water pipes to bring that water down to the village. With pipe and two holding tanks, the Masai Village could have water for drinking and irrigation making them practically self sufficient. The estimated cost for this project is $15,000.

Additionally, we have an open invitation from the island of Pemba which is part of the Zanzibar provence, to drill wells there.

Finally, there is a great need on a small island off the coast of Tanzania, not part of the Zanzibar group of islands that has no water source at all. They must get water by canoe from a nearby island.
