CHaRA teamed up with ELEOS ministry to bring teaching and training of clean birth kits to Pemba and Unguja Zanzibar.  A team of six people join Ron and Carol McDonald on a two week mission.  They spent the first week teaching the 8 Districts in Pemba.  Then the seminar was taught in 2 locations in Unguja and to the midwives of Tumbatu Island. 189 Midwives and 6 leaders attended the seminars. Over 2200 birth kits were distributed to these ladies for their work to deliver healthy babies. These kits provide the needed tools to perform a clean safe birth, saving the lives of both mother and baby.  Gaylyn Quesenberry Director of ELEOS is a registered nurse in North Carolina, she was the teacher. She and team member Peggy Chaffins began this ministry a few years before meeting CHaRA. Other team members: Janice Kennedy and Jacque Hall also were involved by packing the birth kits.

The midwives were a bit shy at first. But after a few minutes of talking to them and sharing our lives as mother and grandmothers they began to share with us. During the meetings they sang this song; "Wakunga msilaaale laale laale, Wakunga msilaale bado mapambano, Na sisi hatulaali laali laali, Na sisi hatulaali bado mapambano." A MIDWIFE NEVER SLEEPS!  It was a time of sharing how God created life and how they were chosen to bring His creation into this world. They were so excited to recieve the birth kits to help them help those who cannot afford these items, which is the majority of women in these areas. We will track the use and usefulness of these kits. Then we will continue to provide the kits as we are able. You can be part of this great program to save the life of a mother and baby.
